Weekend #8 Recap: Our training was for Hypnosis Weight Loss (a.k.a Weight Management) and it rocked plus Students had Real Breakthroughs to boot!

Students received another full weekend of top notch Hypnotherapy training from the NW Hypnosis Institute as Bruce Terrill, CI, CHt worked his magic. The topic was weight loss and on several occasions Bruce pulled back the curtain and showed the students the inner working of what makes the NW Hypnosis Institute’s teachings so different. Bruce not only teaches the NGH (National Guild of Hypnotists) course materials and tons of additional materials – he also uses several special techniques to instill confidence and skills that would normally take students a significant amount of time in a professional practice plus loads of practical application to achieve. Most students in the class just enjoy learning from Bruce and don’t realize the extremely unique / world class training they are receiving… Bruce is a-ok with that, in fact he prefers it that way.

The weekend’s course materials consisted of a full Weight Management Session Checklist (below is some of what students practiced & learned):

Establish Rapport with Client

rapport, rapport, rapport – you can’t help a client if you don’t have rapport. So we practice it over and over again.

Client Information Form

4 page intake form (the basics)

Weight Management Questionnaire

12 page questionnaire

the “meat and potatoes” of the program

Basic Assessment Worksheet

Goal Setting Worksheet

Weight Management Script

custom designed for each individual clients needs

Weight Loss Contract

Teaching Client Weight Management Autosuggestion Exercise

Teach Client Self-Hypnosis

Plus additional Hypnotherapy procedures, tests, steps & practice.

The single most powerful thing over the entire weekend (according to several students) was the Diagnostic Trance Process. “The Diagnostic Trance involves an exploration of the various unconscious images and associations connected to the problem.” It was amazing yet so simple and several students gained huge breakthroughs (and practical steps) into improving / fixing personal “problems” they practiced with. I just love how powerful yet simple hypnotherapy is… it simply just works! I can’t wait to hear all of the weight loss success stories from the students when we attend class two weeks from now.

Hair loss and thinning hair is an event none of us looks forward to with glee. But for many men, and women, it is a reality. Hypnotherapy may be the solution to keeping a full head of hair.

While most of us think of the typical “male pattern baldness”, hair loss and hair thinning can be just as prevalent and worrisome for women.

Pattern baldness, also called androgenetic alopecia, can affect over 30% of men and women alike and often occurs when DHT, a metabolite of testosterone, shrinks hair follicles. Hormonal imbalances (like menopause) can also serve as triggers for hair loss, as can some medications, chemotherapy, nutritional imbalances, and stress.

Many over-the-counter options for hair restoration may help enlarge the shrunken (or shrinking) hair follicles; appropriate diet and supplements may improve blood chemistry; but getting to the root of the cause is key.

A June 2009 article in Self Healing by Dr. Andrew Weil cites that mind-body experts at Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (ACIM) have determined hypnotherapy can help people with “alopecia nervosa and other types of hair loss.” A 2008 study done at ACIM found more than 57% of the clients who underwent hypnotherapy showed, “significant hair growth after…hypnosis.”

Hypnotherapy can help you get to the source of your hair loss. In the hands of a well-trained hypnotherapy professional, you just might find you can stop the loss and establish a new, healthier pattern for your life in the process. If you would like to start your new pattern of growth, please contact Shawn Marie Howe, a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Registered Nurse, and Master Herbalist. You can reach Shawn at A Healing Place at 503-263-3642 and www.ahealingplacecanby.com.

As a seasoned educator I often used “visualization” to improve student confidence, relaxation, and reading skills for my elementary age students. I am pleased to find the following abstract from Fillmer, H. Thompson, addressing the use of hypnosis for reading improvement.
A study was undertaken to investigate the effects of one hypnotic session on the reading improvement of high-risk college students with low aptitude scores and histories of failure in academic situations. The 27 students in the experimental group participated in a one-hour hypnosis session in which they were given a procedure to follow for self-hypnosis before reading activities. Another 33 students served as a control group. The records that the students in the experimental group kept helped divide that group into three categories for further analysis: those students who hypnotized themselves fewer than five times, those who hypnotized themselves from five to nine times, and those who hypnotized themselves more than nine times. The experimental group as a whole showed greater gains on vocabulary and comprehension test scores than the control group. The data also indicated that students who hypnotized themselves more than nine times during the ten weeks of the study made significantly greater improvements in both reading vocabulary and comprehension than those who hypnotized themselves fewer times or students in the control group. The results clearly indicated that the regular use of self-hypnosis significantly improved reading performance.

If you are interested in finding out how hypnosis can improve your reading and comprehension skills, please contact Debbie Taylor, a former reading teacher turned hypnotherapist, at Intuitive Hypnosis at 503-312-4660.

As you may be aware from recent media coverage, there is growing concern at both Government and public level on the number of caesarean births being carried out in this country. Are there really that many more women than in the past requiring caesarean deliveries?
Research shows that hypnosis is very effective in all areas of childbirth but more than anything, it offers a huge benefit in helping a woman to overcome the fear/tension/pain cycle. Gaining control over the fears associated with childbirth may not only influence a woman’s decision on the use of invasive analgesics but, more and more often, her decision about opting for a caesarean delivery when not medically necessary. Our culture has taken on the erroneous belief that childbirth must be painful (and un-natural) and so it is very rewarding to help a woman overcome her fears, teach her how to control the sensations during child birth, and allow her to enjoy the incredible experience of delivering her child in a natural manner. After all, what is more natural than childbirth?

As a professional educator turned hypnotherapist, I tend to perceive and process everything in life as a lesson to be learned. Perhaps this is why I was drawn to hypnosis. The ability to “learn” is greatly enhanced through hypnosis. In fact, that’s what hypnosis is all about! Just imagine, as infants we have no experience with which to compare events; in other words, no CRITICAL FACULTY. The critical faculty acts as a filter between our conscious and subconscious minds. It compares new information with emotional links, memories and beliefs in order to protect us. Any information allowed past this aspect of our being is taken by the subconscious mind as absolute truth. Therefore, when we experience an event, our memories, emotional responses and beliefs interact to tell us what is good or bad; (whether it is in harmony with our existing programs and if we are safe or should respond with our fight or flight instinct). This explains why we don’t always do what is in our best interest. We almost always do what is familiar. This is how we avoid internal conflict and maintain a state of comfort. How do we change this? How do we get to the point of doing what IS in our best interest and still avoid internal conflict and maintain that state of comfort? This is accomplished by working with a skilled hypnotherapist. Yes, to realize significant change, we must alter the program at the subconscious level. To do this, we must bypass the critical faculty and access the subconscious mind where we can implement, through suggestion, the selective thinking which will allow us to achieve our goals and do what IS in our best interest each and everyday. We don’t “forget” the old ways of thinking, we learn to alter our perception of the meanings we gave them. Once you have learned that you CAN run your own life through changing your perceptions, you will be able to improve any and all aspects of your life and create your desired reality.

With the current state of the economy there are many people that have lost their jobs, or are in fear of losing their jobs. Perhaps this is a good time to reconsider your career choice, and perhaps move in a new direction. When you were younger you may have been under a great deal of pressure to choose a particular career or field to work in. Maybe you were trying to statisfy somebody elses wishes, or maybe you just didn’t have a solid idea of what you wanted to do. It can be very frustrating to have to go to work day after day at something you know is not what you should be doing. You may feel trapped where you are, or you may feel hopeless and restless with your current occupation. Hypnosis can help you develop patience with yourself as you learn to receive guidance from your unconscious and universal minds about the direction of your life’s work. There may be a reason for the resistance you feel about your current career situtation. Give yourself the gift of personal exploration through hypnosis and find out what you are really here to do.

I bet we are all in the same garden when it comes to negative thinking. Take the same garden of negative thinkers and how many of you are chronic negative thinkers? That is, you just can’t seem to find the habit of thinking in a positive frame. Again, that’s a lot of us still in that garden of self-sabotage. I say self-sabotage because in no way is negative thinking beneficial for us in any way. That kind of thinking causes stress and anxiety which can lead to health issues and many other problems further down the road ( if it hasn’t already presented itself) . So I’m not really talking cynicism or sarcasm, I’m talking about the repeating negative self-talk that’s hindering you from enjoying life to the fullest. Whether somebody knocked the hope out of you, you grew up in a negative family environment, negativity is from lack of self-esteem or confidence, or plainly because you don’t know how to think in a positive light, negative thinking is hindering you from experiencing the joy that would otherwise be present if you were able to pull yourself out of that pessimism.

Not many of us can recognize and admit that negative thinking can control our lives. For those who have the courage to face their issue, you can find help and perhaps understand where the negative thinking is managed in your subconscious. Hypnosis can help you understand your habits by accessing the subconscious mind. Accepting your subconscious instincts relieves you of half your problems. These detrimental negative thinking patterns are like weeds in the mind. Hypnosis is a tool that can tend to the garden of your mind and release the habit of negative thinking. There is a seed that was planted without the full conscious awareness of why the pattern of negativity has taken root.

Take control of your negative thinking and self-talk by allowing yourself healing that has held you back from a life of greatness and well being. Seek hypnotherapy to help you tend to your mind and live the life of happiness and well being you deserve. By understanding how negative thinking can be detrimental, I will reframe by giving you insight into how BENEFICIAL positive thinking can affect your life:

Live longer

Helps with stress management/ decrease stress

Improve your health

Greater resistance to catching the common cold

Reduce risk of coronary artery disease

Better coping skills during Hardships

Stay motivated and achieve more in less time

Create a positive attitude and mindset in you

Gain more confidence and inspire those around you

Puts the LAW OF ATTRACTION to work for you

Increase in energy to stay focused and on top of things

One of the things I dislike about going to the gym is the anixety and fear producing row of TV’s in front of the cardio equipment. I have found the content of major TV to be stressful and counterproductive to creating a peaceful and productive life. This past year has been no exception. I know our economy is currently unwell. But the constant attention to “Economy in Crisis” is feeding out of control fear and anxiety. I wonder how does one stay out of the fear? How do we get out of anxiety created by the media hyped fear?

My method of avoiding TV and those who dwell on the negative is a short term fix. Reality finds me at the gym amongst the doomsday messages on the TV. I could close my eyes, but I would miss out on one of the best features of being single and belonging to a co-ed gym, the men who are working out along side of me. Another perk is the various magazines available to read and counter the news. Oprah’s magazine is filled with tips and stories I find relevant. One story in her March 2009 issue, piqued my interest while climbing hills on the bike.

It began, “Money Anxiety Disorder…The latest American epidemic” The story by Nancy Palmer highlights a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association where it found “80% of us are finding the financial crisis a significant cause of stress.”

She also notes, … “the pervasive sense of panic, can take a serious toll on health, putting you at higher risk for a host of ailments. Science has show that exercise and meditation are two of the most effective ways to reduce stress but you know that and are likely to feel too pressured to try either.” (its too bad to get stuck in feeling stressed and missing out on the positive views at the gym)

The article also notes other well known stress reducers. Besides exercise one of my favorites is hypnosis.

Get hypnotized. For years people have turned to hypnosis for help quitting smoking and losing weight, but the technique is also becoming popular among business types desperate to overcome financial stress, according to a November report in The Wall Street Journal. Generally, in hypnosis, a therapist uses verbal cues to put clients into a deeply relaxed state, where they become absorbed in their inner thoughts, then offers suggestions to shift an attitude so they can better tackle a problem. In this case, the suggestions might be “Money is energy that comes and goes” or “Your net worth doesn’t equal your personal worth,” to deflect the paralysis and insecurity that financial panic can cause. Ideally, clients learn the process on their own. “While it won’t make you richer, it will help you handle, and feel better. “

Reading the article and its suggestion made sense to me. As a hypnotherapist, I have been noticing the toll the economy is taking on people and am glad to see the media is now offering positive advice for dealing well with the issues we are all contending with. It is great to hear accolades for a therapeutic modality that has infinite applications for helping people help themselves.

Although TV Viewing can still ram my attention with distressing news I have hypnosis techniques and exercise as the means of countering the panic the news stimulates. My time at the gym has even more benefits for me and thats in addition to the view.
