NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
The very best definition (IMHO) is from the movie “The Living Matrix” (outstanding movie btw) and it says,
“NLP is a practical form of Psychology
which starts from where you are now
and looks at where you want to be
and uncovers what’s in the way.”
It’s a simplistic & general definition but since NLP is so vast and encompassing I feel this definition is perfectly simple.
Neuro, Linguistic & Programming – Defined.
Neuro: in this context means “Brain” but definitions say, “nerve, nerves, or the nervous system.”
Linguistic: means “of or relating to language or linguistics.” In this context linguistic more specifically means “any form of communication.”
Programming: means “the designing, scheduling, or planning of a program” or “creating a sequence of instructions.”
The Oxford English Dictionary says:
“neurolinguistic programming n. a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them; a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour.” (i)
So In Conclusion, NLP Is…
“NLP is a communication to and from the brain of an individual which reveals “what is”. Then a trained NLP practitioner can use any of more than 200+ different processes (programs) to evoke the desired result in that individual.”
I’ve personally experienced numerous transformations due to NLP, both in others and in myself… and all by only using some form of communication. Simply astonishing, in my opinion!

You explained and broke down what NLP is very nicely! I love the definition you posted and am going to write that down! I enjoyed this article!
Robert,
this is one of the best definitions of NLP i have ever heard, thank you for posting it here. NLP as a field is so broad and deep that it is simpler and easier to APPLY NLP than it is to describe it! What i love about NLP is that most thinking people are really already “doing” NLP without realizing it. Once they learn how to consciously use language and thinking to achieve what they want, those skills become a natural part of their success and wellbeing.
Love what you are doing on your site, thank you.
