As a seasoned educator I often used “visualization” to improve student confidence, relaxation, and reading skills for my elementary age students. I am pleased to find the following abstract from Fillmer, H. Thompson, addressing the use of hypnosis for reading improvement.
A study was undertaken to investigate the effects of one hypnotic session on the reading improvement of high-risk college students with low aptitude scores and histories of failure in academic situations. The 27 students in the experimental group participated in a one-hour hypnosis session in which they were given a procedure to follow for self-hypnosis before reading activities. Another 33 students served as a control group. The records that the students in the experimental group kept helped divide that group into three categories for further analysis: those students who hypnotized themselves fewer than five times, those who hypnotized themselves from five to nine times, and those who hypnotized themselves more than nine times. The experimental group as a whole showed greater gains on vocabulary and comprehension test scores than the control group. The data also indicated that students who hypnotized themselves more than nine times during the ten weeks of the study made significantly greater improvements in both reading vocabulary and comprehension than those who hypnotized themselves fewer times or students in the control group. The results clearly indicated that the regular use of self-hypnosis significantly improved reading performance.

Debbie, Why do you suppose that hypnosis or self-hypnosis can influence such significance in reading and other comprehension skills? Is it relaxation that we must experience in order to achieve such successful results with learning?
Can you help a client read faster as well? I see you were referring to College students with this article and I know that speed reading and comprehension are key. Can you do this? I would love to learn how.
Yes, it is possible to increase your reading speed and level of comprehension and I will be glad to show you how! The key to success in this, and all hypnosis, is motivation and repetition. As this article points out, those students that used hypnosis most often had the best results! Motivation = Success!
Hi Bunni,
Yes, relaxation always increases your ability to comprehend and do well in just about anything. However, I think the dominant contribution of hypnosis is the increased ability to focus on what you’re reading, along with the repetition and review of the material. Using hypnosis as a way to train yourself to focus on your reading, and to integrate multisensory input during repetition and review allows new and reviewed material to go from the short term memory to the long term memory.
Hypnosis and NLP are both great tools for building up your unconscious resources to perform better. Reading is a great example. Happy training everyone.
